Artist Residencies

The project

Inspired by the house's history as the residence of the Capelinhos scientific mission, AVISTAVULCÃO has created a cutting-edge artistic residency space in the "Casa da Missão" for the Azores archipelago, facing the world.

In the same way that in 1957 scientists from all over the world came here to experience an extraordinary event - an underwater eruption - documenting it for posterity, we want this house to once again welcome people at work, now artists, who can think and create around this peculiar landscape of new land that reminds us of the beginning of the formation of the Atlantic islands.

AVISTAVULCÃO proposes to host national and international artists working in the "Casa da Missão", located in Canto, in the parish of Capelo, in an annual program of artistic residencies that aims to make the space surrounding the Capelinhos Volcano a place of cutting-edge international creation.

AVISTAVULCÃO opened in September 2021 and operated in 2022 as a cultural space for the community (meetings, video installations, parties, book launches).

AVISTAVULCÃO's artist residency project begins in 2023 with a program of 6 residencies throughout the year.

The house

The house available for artist residencies is next to the main house. A typical stone house used in the past to store grain (on the second floor) and animals (in the store). This house is a fine example of Capelo's rural houses, made of exposed stone, without a concrete trailer.

In 2018 the house was completely renovated inside, keeping the open space on the second floor, with a kitchen next to the living room and creating two bedrooms in a structure suspended from the ceiling. The store is a work studio. From the window you can see the Capelinhos volcano and the Comprido Harbour.

The surroundings

The house is located 1.5 km from the Capelinhos volcano and 2 km from Comprido Harbour, once a whaling port and now one of the most emblematic bathing and diving areas on the island.

You can also enjoy the surrounding area with a garden, barbecue, vegetable patch, orchard and farm animals.

Conditions

AVISTAVULCÃO welcomes artistic proposals from all areas with the general theme of the relationship between the arts, the community and the surrounding nature.

Artists will be chosen based on the criteria of avant-garde, quality and integration into the territory.

The residencies focus on artistic processes, including moments of audience development and community awareness of the arts. They should encourage the direct participation of the public in the artistic processes, whether through talks, workshops, school visits or other formats proposed by the artists, and always end with public presentations of the results.

AVISTAVULCÃO offers artists in residence low-cost stays including all living expenses (food costs borne by the artist) and local support in the production of their projects.

AVISTAVULCÃO offers artists in residence local support to accompany their projects, whatever their stage of development, discover the territory, integrate into the local community, make contact with the population and establish partnerships and collaborations with public and private institutions on the three islands of the Azorean Triangle Faial, Pico and São Jorge.
