The house, "A Casa da Missão", an art residency place, is located on the westernmost point of Faial Island, in the parish of Capelo, at the end of Rua do Canto, 1.5 km from the Capelinhos Volcano, a natural monument and classified area of the Azores Geopark. It is a very quiet area, facing the Atlantic Ocean, surrounded by nature, with few houses, where you can enjoy true silence.
The volcanic landscapes are a hallmark. 2 km from the house are the magnificent natural pools of Porto do Comprido—one of the most emblematic bathing and diving spots in the Azores. The house is also surrounded by extensive trails, ideal for discovering the volcano route, and is profusely wooded with endemic Macaronesia plants typical of the Laurisilva forests.
Guests are provided with fully equipped accommodation with a private entrance. This house, known in the Azores as an ‘Atafona’, is a traditional building constructed from basalt stone. Fully preserved, Atafona is a fine example of Capelo’s rural architecture, with exposed stonework and all the authentic character of traditional Azorean houses.
In 2018, the house underwent a complete renovation, with a design by an architect who sought to enhance the comfort and functionality of the space whilst preserving its original layout. The ground floor features an open-plan layout, where the kitchen flows seamlessly into the living room with a fireplace, alongside a bathroom. A suspended structure was also created in the ceiling to accommodate two bright bedrooms.
From the windows, one can see the Capelinhos volcano, Porto do Comprido and the ocean, with a view towards the sunset. The house also has access to a large outdoor area.
The guests will also have the possibility to use the spaces of the Artistic Residencies, like the common studio workshop with tools for manual works and a library with books concerning the cultural history of the Azores and the volcanic phenomena's
The accommodation is not aimed at conventional tourism, but rather at guests seeking an authentic local experience and an alternative to the hustle and bustle of modern life. Guests seeking peace and quiet in a special setting, a place surrounded by nature and steeped in history and culture.
The accommodation is perfect for those who wish to combine a holiday in nature with manual and artistic activities, as our house offers access to a workspace, a library and a micro-cinema room with a bar.
Should a guest wish to present their work to the local community, we will be happy to help make this happen!
