Spanish filmmaker Lois Patiño undertook a writing and research residency near the Capelinhos volcano for his fiction film "ARIEL," which was shot in April 2023 on the islands of Faial and Pico. ARIEL is a feature film loosely inspired by Shakespeare's "The Tempest," where the director chose the islands of Faial and Pico as a natural setting and incorporated several local people as actors and extras. The film had its world premiere at the Rotterdam International Film Festival in 2025, produced by Bando à Parte (Portugal), Filmika Galaika (Spain), and with local production by AvistaVulcão/Barca13.
